Welcome to the 2008/2009 school year!
As the new Superintendent of the Bonsall Union School District it is a great honor to welcome you on behalf of the Board of Trustees to an exciting 2008/2009 school year. My approach to education can best be described by the Japanese word “kaizen” which can be translated as a ‘dedication to continuous improvement’. My vision is that Bonsall schools will rank among the highest performing schools in our County and State. I bring a sense of urgency to continuously improve teaching and learning in our District to prepare our students for an increasingly competitive global economy. Only by aligning the efforts of our Board of Trustees, staff, parents, community, and students can we provide such added value to our students and community. We face great challenges of dwindling resources and increased performance expectations but we cannot allow these challenges to take us away from focusing on aligning our efforts. In Bonsall I have found great energy, expertise, and willingness to work hard. By aligning these attributes toward continually improving our public education system we will not only overcome the challenges we face, we will thrive.
Some of these challenges add to the excitement of the coming year. The opening of the new Bonsall Elementary School, adopting new instructional materials for math, implementing innovations in technology, and our leadership transitions are such examples. My predecessor, Dr. Jeff Felix, planned and began these wonderful changes with great foresight and staff involvement; we look forward to guiding the collaboration among the entire school community that will be needed for their successful implementation. Some challenges will require greater understanding, insight, and innovative use of resources as our State’s budget issues reduce our options to serve our community as we have in the past.
Together we will face these situations and align our efforts to improve our District systems in ways that continue to nurture every aspect of a child’s educational development. Academics, arts, ethical behavior training and athletics are all part of our District’s approach. As stated in our Mission Statement, we will provide “academic excellence and support for all students, enabling them to acquire the skills to meet present needs and the further challenges in a complex and changing society”. This is not something the District can do alone, but together with the entire school community we will.
